The Neurocritical Care Society’s (NCS) Trainee Committee is excited to announce that it is accepting applications for the fourth year of the NCS Mentorship Program formally held from January – December 2020!
Mentorship is instrumental to healthcare professional development, and many leaders within NCS attest to the importance that mentors have served in their career trajectory over time. Developing relationships between established and new practitioners can lay the foundation for mentees to obtain the support they need to achieve success and advance the neurocritical care profession forward. Connecting formal mentors to mentees in the NCS mentorship program helps build long-lasting relationships and empower mentees to reach their full potential.
In medicine, mentorship has been reported to have important influence on personal and professional development, including career progression and research productivity, increasing the likelihood of publication and grant success.1 Increased collegiality, communication skills and networking have also been reported as benefits of mentorship within healthcare, with overall enhancement in physical and psychological health to promote resilience in healthcare providers.2 While numerous definitions exist, mentorship has most often been be defined as:
“The process whereby an experienced, highly regarded, empathetic person (the mentor) guides another individual (the mentee) in the development and re-examination of their own ideas, learning, and personal and professional development. The mentor … achieves this by listening and talking in confidence to the mentee.” 3
The NCS mentorship program came to fruition in 2017, when neurointensivists from around the world were connected with medical trainees in residency and fellowship with a passion for neurocritical care. The program has since expanded to include pharmacists, nurse practitioners, nurses and physician assistants. The Trainee Section matches mentees to mentors based on clinical, research and educational interests.
The program is formally once year long, in which at least monthly communication between mentor and mentees is advised to facilitate guidance in career development and overcoming personal and professional challenges. In 2019, mentors and mentees discussed specialty-specific topics such as:
- Solidifying career goals and design course of action to attain short- and long-term goals
- Curriculum Vitae review
- Preparing for interviews
- Time management
- Establishing effective work-life balance
- How to lead a team effectively and resolve conflicts amongst team members
- Expanding your practice and responding to evolving landscapes in your specialty area
- Paving the path for a successful research career and getting funding
Unique to the NCS mentorship program is the collaborative longitudinal project between the mentor and mentee. Past projects have ranged from implementation of new training programs to advance neurocritical care training for nurse practitioners and military residency programs to publications of original clinical research or review articles in peer reviewed journals and textbooks.

Who may apply?
Mentor: Any attending neurointensivist, nurse practitioner (NP), registered nurse (RN), physician assistant (PA) or pharmacist may apply to serve as a mentor. There is not a minimum year in practice requirement to be a mentor. However, applicants less than three years out of training are encouraged to apply as a mentee. Those in either academic or private practice from all training backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Mentees: Applicants may be any physician resident or fellow, nurse practitioner (NP), registered nurse (RN), physician assistant (PA) or pharmacist within three years of training completion with an interest in neurocritical care. Graduates in the first three years out of training are encouraged to apply as mentees.
