President's Update - March 2025
Published on: March 03, 2025
Dear NCS Community:
Welcome to March! As we transition into a new season, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible efforts of our members in advancing neurocritical care worldwide.
Last month, NCS had a successful presence at the MENA Regional Meeting in Kuwait and a leadership meeting with ANIM in Germany, where ENLS 6.0 was soft launched. The enthusiasm and engagement at these events underscored our global impact and the dedication of our international partners and members. Looking ahead, I’m excited to share that our next South America Regional Meeting will take place May 28-30, 2025, in Medellin, Colombia. Please check out the NCS website to register to attend!
March also brings an important global initiative: World Coma Day. This event raises awareness of coma science, unites healthcare professionals and amplifies patient stories. The Curing Coma Campaign has collaborated globally to deliver this event on March 22. I encourage all of you to participate by signing up and attending this free event.
As we continue to advance our field, NCS is developing a priority list to drive fundraising strategies. Through this thoughtful work, we will focus resources to support our mission of research, education and innovation while ensuring the organization’s financial health.
We know that our daily care improves day-to-day patient outcomes, but evidence is growing on how inpatient efforts can play a critical role in long-term recovery. To foster collaboration and knowledge sharing, I am excited to share that the Board has approved the creation of a NeuroRecovery Clinic Consortium section within NCS. This group will be chaired by Dr. Matt Jaffa with focus on enhancing our understanding of best practices for post ICU clinic creation and patient recovery. Please contact Dr. Jaffa at matthew.jaffa@hhchealth.org if you are interested in getting involved with this section.
In this spirit of advancing clinical practice, the NCS and the German Neurointensive Care Society (DGNI) invite members to provide feedback on the Guidelines for Neuroprognostication in Critically Ill Adults with Acute Ischemic Stroke. This public comment period is open now through March 7, offering an opportunity to contribute to the development of this important guidance. Your input is valuable in shaping evidence-based recommendations for clinical practice.
I’d also like to remind you about two key funding opportunities: The INCLINE and Research Training Fellowship grants. These grants support groundbreaking research in neurocritical care. If you or a colleague are conducting research, I encourage you to learn more and apply.
As always, your stories highlight the incredible work happening in neurocritical care. Please continue sharing your Making Waves stories by emailing info@neurocriticalcare.org.
Finally, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for your ongoing work and support throughout my presidency. Your dedication fuels our mission, and I look forward to the continued progress we’ll achieve together.
